What I Learned From Finishing My Book’s First Draft
i completed the first draft of my book
i never imagined how soul-wrenching it would be to cross that finish line! Writing a book is challenging in ways which i never anticipated.
Aside from mad respect to all artists who turn themselves inside out, transporting their soul into a medium...Here's what i learned:
1. Release Perfectionism
i've written more eloquent business emails than the majority of the creative writing in the book. This was torturous for my poetic soul. However, i could see how the process taught by my epic guide KamalaDevi McClure would allow me to actually finish a draft. i stuck with it & have up-leveled by making peace with my inner-perfectionist.
2. With Willpower We Are Unstoppable
When i put my mind to something & say "i'm going to do it", i will move volcanoes to make it happen. i was terrified to change my weekly work calendar to prioritise my book. Fear: What if clients can't book themselves in?
Reality: By the end of last month, my EFT practice was fully booked for the whole of July.
3. One Step At A Time
Completing the first draft was the culmination of many small steps. i know this practice well from walking 2,000km (1,300 miles) across Europe, but it was really interesting to experience it with writing.
i stuck to my writing schedule even when i was grieving the loss of a friend, even when writing was tearing me up on the inside... and i did it over and over, even when most of me really didn't want to.
Next step - i let the manuscript rest for a month or two before diving into the rewriting phase.
i'm having a break for another week & enjoying Bali! After, i'll keep my reduced session schedule & use the hours reserved for writing to develop an online course ~ another lifelong dream!
Massive holler of gratitude to all accountability buddies & encouragement from friends & family!
